Directing Theatre - Life Under A Paper Moon
I have been collaborating with the amazing folks at Theatre Winter Haven in Winter Haven, Florida since 1993. We've done over 40 projects together. So it takes a lot to surprise us. Until Mary Poppins, that is! I've never been a big fan of movies turned into plays, as the pitfalls are many and the rewards for the audience can be few and far between. Comparison is a human trait, and not a friendly one when it's lodged squarely in the realm of childhood memory. So it was with some trepidation that we took on Mary Poppins. And then the unexpected happened! It turned out that it was not about the massive scenic challenges, or the flying, or the 500+ costumes. It was about a family, and a lost boy who had become a lost man. It was, like all surprises, the kind of experience that can take your breath away.
